How to Add ACT! to the Exception List for Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
Question
You are using Windows XP with Service Pack 2 installed, and the Internet Connection Firewall is enabled. You attempt to share your ACT! database over your Local Area Network and the Internet Connection Firewall blocks access.

Answer
Windows XP with Service Pack 2 installed enables the Internet Connection Firewall by default. You may disable this option in Windows or create an exception for ACT! and the SQL instance of ACT!. To create an exception for ACT! and the SQL instance of ACT!, use the following steps:

  1. Right-click the My Network Places icon, and then click Properties from the shortcut menu. The Network Connection window appears.
  2. Right-click the Local Area Connection icon, and then click Properties from the shortcut menu. The Local Area Connection Properties dialog box appears.



  3. Under the Advanced tab, click Settings. The Windows Firewall dialog box appears.




  4. Under the Exceptions tab click Add Program. The Add a Program dialog box appears.





  5. Click ACT! 2006 or ACT! 2005 from the Programs list, and then click OK.

    Click Browse and navigate to the ACT! program folder, (default location is C:\Program Files\ACT\ACT for Windows\ or C:\Program Files\ACT\ACT for Win 77\)
  6. Double-click the Act8.exe or Act7.exe file. The Add a Programm dialog box reappears.
  7. Click OK. The Windows Firewall dialog box reappears.
  8. Click Add Program again. The Add a Program dialog box reappears.
  9. Click Browse and navigate back to the ACT! program folder C:\Program Files\ACT\ACT for Windows\ or C:\Program Files\ACT\ACT for Win 7\ and then double-click the ACTRunner.exe file.
  10. Click OK. The Windows Firewall dialog box reappears.
  11. Click Browse and navigate to the SQL instance of ACT! and then double-click the sqlservr.exe file. (default location is C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL$ACT7\Binn) The Add a Program dialog box reappears.
  12. Click OK, the Windows Firewall dialog box reappears.




  13. You will see three new entries in the Programs and Services list: ACT! 8.x/2006 or ACT! 7.x/2005, ACTRunner.exe and sqlservr.exe. Ensure that the check boxes are enabled. Click OK, the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box reappears.
  14. Click OK to close the Local Area Connection Properties, and then close the Network Connection window.
